Auckland, on New Zealand's North Island, is full of a diverse range of beaches, and Auckland's popular beaches are used for all kinds of beach activities, such as sunbathing, Auckland scuba diving and snorkelling, swimming, and surfing in Auckland.

With more than 100 beaches within an hours' drive from central Auckland, most beaches in Auckland are generally categorised by area, with Auckland's beaches known either simply as East, West or North. The beaches close to Auckland city centre are the East Coast beaches located along Auckland's Tamaki Drive, and most of these beaches are safe, secluded and popular with families in Auckland. Beaches on Judge's Bay and Mission Bay, close to central Auckland, are particularly suitable for children in Auckland.




Swimming off Auckland's beaches is best at high tide and the west coast beaches in Auckland are good for swimming, although the sea can be rough at times, so care should always be taken. Some of the best beaches for swimming in Auckland include Piha Beach in the West, Brooks Beach, Cornwallis Beach and Omana Beach on the outskirts of Auckland city centre, and Takapuna Beach on the North Shore of Auckland.

Auckland's impressive beaches are home to excellent beach facilities, such as busy beachside restaurants, cafés, pubs and bars, often with magnificent coastal views. Across Waitemata Harbour from Auckland city centre you will find an impressive selection of beaches, stretching north to the Whangaparaoa Peninsula, around 40 km / 25 miles from Auckland. Also, the nearby island of Waiheke, close to Auckland in the Hauraki Gulf, is full of small secluded beaches, with sheltered, clear water suitable for bathing.
