Auckland MuseumsThe museums of Auckland add further interest for sightseers exploring this part of the North Island. The War Memorial Museum is especially noteworthy and is situated in the Domain public park, within the central suburb of Grafton, where it houses a wealth of historic artefacts from around New Zealand.

Particularly suitable for families is the Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT), which is to be found within the Western Springs area, near to Auckland Zoo and the Western Springs Stadium. Also popular, the Voyager New Zealand Maritime Museum, located alongside Freemans Bay and the Dilworth Building, contains a diverse collection of historic maritime memorabilia from around the area.

War Memorial Museum

With a number of impressive displays and fascinating exhibits, this rich attraction explains the history of New Zealand. Visitors to the War Memorial Museum always enjoy the numerous hands-on activities, weaponry collections, seasonal events, a café and a gift shop. Carlaw Park stands close by and is just a short walk to the north.

Monterey Park Motor Museum

Located in western Auckland, the Monterey Park Motor Museum features more than 50 historic vehicles from the last 100 years, including vintage cars and motorcycles. Other attractions include a café areas, a gift shop and the nearby Model World, with models of houses, ships, planes and regular model-making demonstrations.

Navy Museum

The Navy Museum is sited within the Devonport area of the city and is home to a large collection relating to the country's rich naval heritage, with displays of historic uniforms, ship artefacts and medals, together with many photographs of New Zealand's navy over the years. Of note, this venue will shortly be relocating to Torpedo Bay.

Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT)

Located close to the city centre and alongside the Western Springs Gardens, the Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT) is full of interesting, historic exhibits, including vintage cars, motorcycles, a restored steam-powered engine, trams, planes and many technological items from years gone by. The Chamberlain Park Golf Course is just a short distance away, should you fancy a round after your visit.

Voyager New Zealand Maritime Museum

At one time, New Zealand was reliant on the sea for colonisation, trade and sport, and this period is clearly documented at the Voyager New Zealand Maritime Museum through a variety of informative exhibits. Visitors should expect to find various large displays, local artefacts, ships and yachts, migrant boats, photographs, a café area, a gift shop and frequent cruises around Hobson Wharf. Nearby points of reference include both the Copthorne Harbour City Hotel and the Hilton Hotel.
